Mainimati is a large UNESCO World Heritage and archeological site dotted with religious ruins and Buddhist relics, among the most famous of which are Salban Vihara, Charpatra Mura and Kotila Mura, along with several monasteries that date as far back as the 7th and 8th centuries. Some attractions are located within a local military cantonment that forms part of the area, so visitors need special permission to enter.
