The Maritimes Museum of Hamburg is a relatively new museum opened by the German president Horst Köhler in 2008 in the oldest preserved warehouse in the city built in 1878 and 1879.
The collection of model ships, construction plans, uniforms, and maritime art, amounting to over 40,000 items and more than one million photographs was started in 1934 when the mother of the museum owner Peter Tamm presented him his first model ship.
Nowadays the museum occupies 9 floors depicting various facets of maritime history, engineering and art.
The International Committee for Tourism Attractiveness and Sustainable Tourism Development (ICTASTD) adopted a unanimous decision to include the Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg in the World List of Particular Tourist Attractions as a recognition of the value of its cultural heritage and touristic popularity.
